Welcome to First United Methodist Church, Torrington. We are a purpose-driven church
that provides many opportunities to grow individually in the midst of your family and, of course,
within the community of our faith. I would like to visit you or anyone you know of who could
use a visit. Please contact the office to schedule a time. This is a great way for me to get to know
you and a great way for you to get to know me. Our phone number is 860-489-8084. Our email
address is fumctorr@sbcglobal.net. Please see my message below from the church's monthly
newsletter, which we plan to update on this web page every month as well.

Love is patient; Love is kind: love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
1 Corinthians 13; -8a

Have I told you lately how much I love you? Probably, not. It is an emotion we feel but seldom find the time to express with each other. This week, however, I need to tell this wonderful church how very much you mean to me. First, because we are starting our fifth year in ministry together, hard as that is to believe. Time has flown by and each day has been a joy.

But mostly, I want to express my love because, I have been ill this week and forced to discontinue fluttering about. My family will tell you I am not a very patient patient. I do not function well when I am not functioning. (I think the exact word they use is ‘control freak’)  However, when I stopped doing, I was able to spend more time observing and listening to you.

I watched folks jump in to serve and care for me and each other with kindness, gentleness humor and extreme competence. When I was unable to be present with familes who truly needed and deserved my attention, their only concern was for me. No one complained but rather prayed with and for me.

So many folks visited, called and cared for each other when I could not. Roberta lead worship service with less than a few minutes notice, and was extraordinary, I might add. I think I am being to feel superfluous!

This church, this community of faith, this joy and love that we have for each other can only be this strong, this precious because it is the reflection of the love of Christ. His presence shines through you. It is palpable and it is precious. There are so many folks in need of what we have been blessed with.

So, I am asking you all to do one more task. You know someone desperately in need of the love, compassion and grace of Christ. You know someone who needs to be part of this church.  Offer it to them. Reach out; talk to them; listen to them and invite them in. Share with all the love of Christ.

In His Love,

Pastor Barbara
